Many of us are interested in learning the most popular language of the world – Chinese. We assume that it is difficult to master Chinese as the words of the language are almost cryptic. If you believe so, well, take a look at the app, Mandarin Madness.
Mandarin is a form of Chinese. Mandarin Madness is an educational app that teaches you Chinese vocabulary through arcade-style game play. It emphasizes on memory retention skills and provides a fun-based learning environment.
Mandarin Madness consists of more than 240 Chinese words with 41 levels and 3 stages. Once you open the app, you will be welcomed with some melodious traditional music and a colorful Chinese themed display. The words are grouped into packs according to various categories. You are provided with packs of animals, numbers, clothing, vegetables, fruits, colors and so on. You can choose any pack of your choice. There are different levels and stages under each pack.
The first level in each pack is the learning level. You are introduced to some basic Chinese words of the selected category. A bubble consisting of a Chinese word falls from the top to the bottom on the screen. A picture of the word is displayed at the bottom of the screen. The word is pronounced simultaneously. This helps you in identifying the visual and the sound of the word at the same time. You have to save it in your memory quickly. The next word appears in the same manner and this is how it goes on.
In the second level, a word and two pictures are displayed. You have to match the word with the corresponding picture by tapping over the image. The word is also pronounced. In level 3, three pictures are displayed from which you have to choose the right one. This is how the game progresses till you reach higher levels. The idea of the game is to choose the correct option before the word in the bubble reaches the bottom.
After some levels, you don’t have the pronunciation option. The game becomes tougher when you have more options to choose from. The real challenge is to identify and recall the word quickly, before it reaches the bottom.
The game encourages quick learning of words, as it is based on repetitive audio and visual recognition. This app is a wonderful tool for learning the basics of Chinese. I feel that the process of learning is really fun and quick with this app. The navigation is also user- friendly. This app requires an Android version of 2.2 and above. The app costs $0.99.
