The Visible City – Goes Beyond The Walls of A Traditional Museum!
The visible city is the newest iPhone app developed by the Museum of Vancouver and it’s definitely befitting of the denomination of “time machine”, as it takes its users back in time to experience history like never before. This is an augmented reality application, so people can just hold their smartphone in front of a building and this way see the storefronts and neon lights that stood there many years ago.
Those who are keen on re-discovering Vancouver in a whole new way in the period starting from the ’50s and going all the way to the ’70s can now witness the rise and fall of the once iconic neon lights of this fascinating city.
There are a total of 2 interactive and different tours the visible city features and both last for 30 minutes. To mention some of the locations included, they are Hastings Street, Chinatown, eateries, nightclubs, theatres, Granville Street and many more. When running the app, users will be able to listen to stories told by the locals, but also watch video interviews that reveal amazing details and info on the rich history of Vancouver.
Sharing Your Neon Stories:
People can also choose to add their personal stories and then share them with the rest of the app users, while also voting for their favorite places and signs. If they check in at five locations, they’ll receive a two for one admission to the popular Museum of Vancouver.
The app is optimized for the iPhone 5, but it also works on the iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generation, iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and 4S and android phones.
The Visible City is a wonderfully designed app that’s packed with interesting info, maps, photographs and more, while at the same time remaining very easy to navigate. Until a time machine is invented, it’s the only way through which people can explore the once neon illuminated town of Vancouver.
